Let's start with where to stay, because this is NOT the place to pinch pennies. I splurged on three nights at Chromata in Imerovigli ($450/night in shoulder season), and it was worth every euro. My suite was carved into the cliff with a private terrace where I could watch the sunset with a glass of local Assyrtiko wine. The infinity pool seemingly drops off into the Aegean Sea – I took so many photos there that my phone actually sent me a storage warning!
Speaking of that famous Santorini sunset – yes, it lives up to the hype, but NO, you don't need to battle the crowds in Oia. Instead, book a sunset sailing cruise (around €150) that includes dinner and unlimited wine. Floating in the caldera as the sky explodes into shades of pink, orange and purple while sipping Greek wine? Pure magic.
For beaches, you need to know that Santorini isn't your typical Greek island with endless stretches of golden sand. The beaches here are volcanic – think black, red, and even white stone. Kamari Beach has the best setup with comfortable loungers and beach bars serving refreshing cocktails. Red Beach is stunning for photos but not great for swimming. For a truly unique experience, visit the hot springs near Nea Kameni island, where you can swim in warm, mineral-rich waters.
Food in Santorini is a revelation. Skip the tourist traps along the caldera edge (though the views are admittedly spectacular) and venture into villages like Megalochori for authentic tavernas.
